Dr. James Knight and our Fifth Graders!
January 16, 2024
Dear Families,
Last Wednesday we had Dr. James Knight as a guest speaker for our 5th through 8th grade students. It was a remarkable and inspiring talk for all especially as we approached the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. yesterday. Today at our Prayer Assembly Mrs. Melissa Scheller took time to reflect on Dr. Knight’s message and tied it in with a story about Dr. King called “When Martin Luther King, Jr. Wore Roller Skates”. Before she read some of that book, here is what she shared: “Dr. Knight was a really great speaker with a really good message and he talked about Dr. King quite a bit. He talked about how Dr. King didn’t wait until he was older to dream of change or do something to make change happen. Dr. Knight said Dr. King started when he was a kid, just like all of you. Dr. Knight reminded us last week that we are all leaders and change starts with us. It can start in small ways – like being kind to our classmates – and lead to big things. If you see something that is not right, don’t be afraid to speak up. You don’t have to wait until you’re older to make a difference. Never underestimate the change that you can make in the world.” Part of Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy is that we are continually encouraged to lead with the courage and greatness that he did. Thank you Mrs. Scheller for helping us think and learn about this!

Freezing Weather Damage Report from Fr. Colin:
Hello Friends,
As some of you may already know, our campus has been impacted by the recent freeze. On Sunday evening, one of our water lines above the women’s bathroom in the church ruptured and flooded the bathroom. Last night, a water line ruptured in the House of Prayer (the old convent) on the second floor and flooded most of the house. The extent of the damage in both situations is still unknown. We hope the damage in the women’s bathroom is cosmetic, but we are concerned that the damage in the House of Prayer may be more severe. The water is now turned off for both buildings, and plumbers have been scheduled.
Thankfully, the school building had no problems arise.
The net result is:
- The House of Prayer will remain closed for the time being.
- The parish offices are closed until the water is turned back on.
- Masses will still be held at their usual times, however there may be no bathroom access during the weekday masses. We are confident that bathroom access will be available for weekend masses.
- We are working on alternative meeting places/guidance for groups who meet on site.
- We are looking into alternatives for those who pray regularly in the adoration chapel.
Next steps are being taken. Plumbers will be making an initial assessment and some repairs later today, our insurance claims are being filed, and we are going to be assessing the damage overall once these initial steps are completed. Once those happen, we will be developing a game plan to address the damage in the short and medium terms. In the meantime, we will be communicating to you about the status of the situation via email/bulletin when we have relevant information.
Lastly, I want to thank Victoria and Pat Panko and Taniele Tucker – they were the ones on the scene for these situations. Your presence was and is invaluable. Thank you!
Sickness in the School: We have noticed a slight uptick in illness since our break. Be sure and stay home if you have a fever or symptoms of illness. If someone in your house has Covid, please send your student to school masked. Do not hesitate to reach out to the office with questions. Stay healthy!
