Dear Families:
Once again, we find that our country and all of us, are in shock over another school shooting, this time in Uvalde, Texas. Trying to imagine the depth of hurt and damage to the families and people affected by this tragedy in inconceivable. Last Wednesday morning before school, our faculty joined together in prayer for all of those involved. Calmly, our teachers shared concerns about their students and how they would address the horrific event. The chance to gather in prayer helped ease concerns and gave clarity to our roles, as faith leaders and sources of safety and security for our students. When we gathered that afternoon at our faculty meeting teachers reported very few worries among students and a relatively normal day.
Safety is always our number one priority. At our faculty meeting, we reviewed our lockdown procedures and roles and responsibilities during an emergency. We have a detailed Disaster Preparedness Plan that addresses response in the case of fire, earthquake, or lockdown. In the event of an emergency, parents will be notified and given updated information via phone, text, and email through our SwiftReach notification system. We continue to evaluate our procedures and will be discussing any necessary changes.
Tomorrow we turn the calendar to June and the activities start coming non-stop! We begin with Bump-Up Day at 1:15pm on Wednesday, as students move to their next year’s classroom and grade to meet their teacher. Any new students entering the class have been invited to come and meet their classmates. Eighth graders will return to where their grade-school careers began in kindergarten. They don’t fit in the desks and tables as well as they once did, but there are still memories to share.
You should have received the scheduled time for your child/ren’s Learning Celebration to be held on Thursday, June 2nd. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have not. Just a reminder that classes will not be in session as parents join their child to review the portfolio of work from this school year. Each time slot will host a maximum of four students/parents and the classroom teacher will be available to discuss progress. Suggestions for summer activities to prevent learning loss will also be presented. There will be a place for siblings to sit and wait just outside the classroom with a chance to read or do a provided activity sheet. A great day to celebrate the accomplishments of our students this year!
FIELD DAY! Need I say any more? Arguably, the BEST day of the year if you ask any student. Students should be dropped off as usual and after attendance and announcements, they will join their school “Family” at 8:45am in the gym for a day of cheers, games, and activities. The school will be providing juice, chips, and a popsicle for lunch, but families will need to send a sandwich or main course. Per Covid guidelines, it is recommended that we do not share communal food items. (i.e. pizza etc.) Following the awards assembly at the end of the day, we will send them home to you at 3pm, happy and exhausted.
Have a great week!
Mary
