Dear Families,

Please take a moment to read the end of school year letter from Fr. Freitag with wishes for a good summer!  Letter from Fr. Freitag

At our prayer assembly yesterday, our 7th grade students took their seats in the back row chairs as the new school leaders!  And the kindergarteners gave them advice on how they can be the best school leaders! Looking ahead to a great year in 2025-26!.

We continued our prayer assembly with several sweet acknowledgements.  We thanked all our wonderful room parents who throughout the year have provided leadership to their grade level students and families. And we said thanks and goodbye to our Parent Association chairs, Minou Reisinger and Kris Lund. They have strengthened our school community through their work over the last three years. Thank you one and all!

We heard about and celebrated the success of our Track and Field team who competed last Saturday. Thank you to head coach Anna Gillette! Congratulations to all participants! And a special shout out to those who finished in the CYO top three:

  • Gavin Stack – 2nd 50M
  • Dylan Kohout – 3rd 100M, 1st Javelin
  • Micah Darrow – 2nd 200M
  • Rory Hudson – 1st 200M, 1st Long Jump
  • Mason Whittaker – 1st 200M, 2nd Shot Put
  • Carter Gillette – 1st Softball Throw
  • Raphael Alvarez – 2nd 800M
  • Maggie Dwyer – 1st Javelin
  • Ali Thompson – 3rd 1600M

And we ended the assembly with a tribute and song for all the staff who will be leaving: Ms. Covich, Ms. Dent, Ms. Vizzare, Mrs. Sauvage, Ms. Marr, Mrs. Burkhart and Mrs. Austin. With the help of Ms. Kassebaum, the students performed a rewritten version of “How Sweet It Is” (James Taylor) with video accompaniment. What a touching tribute!

This week we are taking time to finish up, clean up and get ready to say our goodbyes for the summer. All are welcome to join us at our final school Mass on Friday at 8:45am.  Students will be dismissed for the summer after Mass. Of note this week:

Kindergarten Graduation will be on Thursday at 11:00am in Banchero Hall. Kindergarten families are invited to this ceremony in Banchero Hall. (Gates open at 10:45 for parking on the playground). School dismissal is at 12pm.

End of year school Mass is at 8:45am on Friday, June 14th.  Please join us!  At the conclusion of Mass, we will welcome the students to their grade level for next fall and send them home to you after receiving their report cards.  If you have an incoming PreK student, they are encouraged to join the fun.  Ms. McDougall will be welcoming them too. Just send them to the area near the choir where she will be standing.

We had a wonderful Graduation Week!

  • The Graduation Dinner last Wednesday for graduates and their parents was hosted by the 7th grade families. Thanks to Lori Roozen for chair, Chris Roozen as head chef, and other organizational leadership from Kristy Street, Stephanie Leyson, Shelly Carroll, Kurstin and Nick Thompson and all the 7th grade students. We said goodbye to 12 school families whose last student is graduating. In addition, the St. Anne Spirit Award was presented to Sasha Muir and Amy Gulmann.  This award recognizes parents that have been instrumental in forwarding the mission of St. Anne School throughout their time with us and whose youngest is graduating.
  • On Thursday we had our Affirmations Assembly in Banchero Hall. This is a time when the whole school comes together and the middle school teachers speak about the gifts each of the students has brought to the school. It is an opportunity to highlight how our students have become active people of faith, lifelong learners, globally aware and well balanced.
  • 5pm Graduation Mass and Ceremony. The student speaker this year was Sasha Worner and the Parent Thank you speech was given by Molly Downer and Ally Pelletier. The Top Scholar award went to Jack McGinnis and Molly Downer. The Inspirational Award went to Kate Howard and the T-Bird Friendship Award went to Sasha Worner. The following students received the Presidential Academic Award: Raphael Alvarez, Vivienne Crandall, Molly Downer, Kate Howard, Scarlett Janzen, Sophie Maximin, Jack McGinnis, Ally Pelletier, Mia Rain, Sophie-Anne Rozmus, Sasha Worner
  • Thank you to our 6th Grade families for hosting a cake reception in Banchero Hall following Graduation!

Dear Families,

Yesterday at our prayer assembly, the first graders expressed appreciation for all that their 8th grade buddies have done for them this year. They shared a video of themselves giving advice to their eighth grade buddies on how to be successful in high school. Advice included keeping their locker clean, getting good grades, making new friends and always having fun. They also shared portraits they made for each 8th grader. Thank you first grade for helping us celebrate our eighth grade class.  They ended with our Irish blessing:

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

And rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

This coming Thursday at 5pm, we will celebrate the Class of 2025 at their graduation Mass. This group of eighth graders is known for being hardworking, inclusive and kind. They have forged deep friendships throughout the years and we are proud of all they have accomplished. Congratulations 8th grade!

Thank you for Learning Celebrations!  Thank you to the teachers for collecting and managing student work. Thank you to all the students for thoughtfully presenting their growth and learning throughout the year to their families.  And thank you to parents for listening and valuing all the hard work your students do day in and day out through the year. Please take time for a quick survey: Learning Celebration Survey.

Thank you for Field Day!  A huge thank you to Ms Gallagher for the amazing field day she organized in her first year with us! So many good skits and cheers, so many fun team games and friendly competition, so many creative chalk drawings and in the end, everyone was a winner. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to manage all the different games spread around the campus. It was a beautiful day that produced very tired students!

Thank you to St. Anne Students, Staff and Families for the beautiful retirement assembly yesterday.  I was completely surprised, touched and so appreciated your thoughtfulness. Thank you for all the wonderful garden tools in a cool garden wagon!  I feel completely ready for garden time now!  Thank you to the students for the video and your kind words and advice for my retirement! Thank you for the amazing garden stone. I love the glass mosaic of St. Anne School and am excited to put it in my garden! I have loved sharing in the good work of learning with all of you at this faith filled school!  It has been a blessing to work here. All my thanks.

Dear Families,

This morning, our second grade students and Mrs. Lanouette shared with us why we celebrate Memorial Day–a day in which we honor all the soldiers who died serving their country. The second graders led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance and then closed with a prayer:

Our Heavenly Father,  On this Memorial Day, we come before you with grateful hearts. We thank you for the brave men and women who have served and protected our country. We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives for our freedom.  We ask for your comfort and peace for the families who mourn the loss of their loved ones. May they find strength in your love and in the knowledge that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.  Help us to honor their memory by living lives of service, kindness, and compassion. Guide us to be peacemakers in our school, our community and our world.  We ask for your continued blessings on our nation, that we may always be a beacon of hope and freedom for all.

Learning Celebration:  We are excited to welcome you this Thursday, May 29th to Learning Celebrations.  This is an opportunity for your student to share with you their learning throughout the school year. The goal is that students get practice recognizing and reflecting on their learning growth. Sharing with their parents gives them practice speaking. It is also an opportunity for families to ask questions like:

  • “In what subject area have you grown the most?”
  • “Tell me about one activity in which you really learned a lot.”
  • “Tell me about one of the learning strengths you noticed in yourself this school year.”
  • “Do you have a learning goal for this summer or next school year? What is it?”

During each time slot, there will be a maximum of four student/parent groups in the classroom. The classroom teacher will take time to check in with each group to discuss student growth and progress.  There will be a place for siblings to sit and wait just outside the classroom with a chance to read or do a provided activity sheet. The students have worked hard this year and it is great to celebrate their growth! The parking lot is open and families can enter through the front doors.

Field Day:  This Friday we have one of our favorite days of the school year! Morning drop off will be as usual, but students will come into the gym to wait for school to start (stations will be already set up on the playground).  Attendance and announcements take place in the classrooms and then students will join their school “Family” in the gym at 8:45 am to launch the day of cheers, games and activities.  The school will be providing pizza and popsicles at lunch for all students!  Water will be available to all.  Students can bring an alternate lunch if necessary.  Students should come dressed for the weather–it currently looks like the low 70s and sunshine. Don’t forget sunscreen and water bottles!  Coach your kids to be moderate in candy consumption. And thanks ahead of time to all our parent helpers!!!!! Here is the schedule in brief:  8:45 TO GYM – 9 START OF SKIT/SONGS – 10 GAMES BEGIN –  12 LUNCH/RECESS – 1 CHALK DRAWING – 1:30 GRADE GROUP ACTIVITIES – 2:30 GYM AWARDS/CLOSING/CLEAN – 3 HOME

Gratitude:

  • Talent Show Thanks!: Wow! We certainly have a talented group of students! Thank you to each and everyone of them for putting on a wonderful show for the whole community.  A huge thanks to Ms. Kassebaum for helping all our participants shine. Thank you for back up help from Ms. Vizzare, Ms. Marr and Ms. Gallagher. And finally, thanks to our hosts, 8th grade students, Evan Gallagher and Jack McGinnis for doing such a marvelous job introducing each act.
  • Thank you to the Parent Association for last Thursday’s Pizza Lunch for the school. Delicious!

Dear Families,

At our Monday prayer assembly the third grade class led us in the praying of the Apostles’ Creed. They shared with us a little about each of the apostles and how they are remembered. The apostles are St. Peter, St. James the Lesser, St. James the Greater, St. Jude, St. Andrew, St. Phillip, St. Simon, St. Matthew, St. John, St. Thomas, St. Bartholomew and St. Matthias. The Apostles’ Creed is a summary of our core Christian beliefs and is a unifying statement for the church.

Thank you to the 2nd grade for their faith leadership at our May Crowning Mass on Friday! They served confidently as lectors, readers, singers and gift bearers.  At the end of Mass, we presented the 7th Grade Leadership Awards.  These awards recognize students who exemplify leadership in each of our four Student Learning Expectations (SLE’s). At their SLE retreat last week, seventh grade students reflected on fellow students who served as role models for them in each of the SLE’s.  Congratulations to our award winners and all our 7th graders.  The school is looking forward to their leadership next year.  This year’s award winners are:

  • Active Person of Faith: Quinn Raney-Ernst
  • Lifelong Learner: Lauren Genna and Harry Roozen
  • Globally Aware: John Holtzclaw
  • Well-Balanced: Conor Hession

Yesterday, Luc and Isabella Connors took over my duties as Principals for the Day courtesy of the winning bid at this year’s auction! They have declared this Thursday, May 22, a FREE DRESS day for the whole school! They started the day with Mrs. Austin’s cinnamon rolls and smoothies and then did a wonderful job visiting classrooms, enjoying a pizza lunch and helping the school run smoothly. Thanks for their steady leadership yesterday!  In addition, they did the final SLE award drawing for the year. Congratulations goes to:

  • An Active Person of Faith: Paul C. (6th)
  • A Life-Long Learner: Reid A. (Kindergarten)
  • A Globally Aware Person: Myles H. (1st)
  • A Well Balanced Person: Chase H. (4th)

Gratitude:

  • Putt-Putt Golf on Friday was a hit! I will humbly say that I got a hole in one and couldn’t be happier with the St. Anne golf ball to remember it by!  Thank you to all who helped with set up and clean up with a particular thanks to Ben Barker, Damon Isham and Erika Love for organizing the event and Parent Association for helping to fund it!
  • Fulcrum Early Childhood Education Grant: I am happy to announce that Ms. McDougall (PreK Lead Teacher), has received a grant on behalf of St. Anne School for $1000 to help cover the cost of purchasing items to enrich play-based STEAM learning within our Pre-K classroom.  Thank you Ms. McDougall and the Fulcrum Foundation. The monies come from the Early Childhood Education Endowment Fund established by Dick Abrams and his late wife, Sharon.

Dear Families,

Welcome to Teacher Appreciation Week! During this week we honor all our teachers, assistant teachers and the support staff of our school. These individuals work tirelessly to create a rich and rewarding learning environment so all our students can grow and thrive.  Their dedication and hard work makes all the difference and we are truly blessed to have each of them in this school building sharing their gifts and passion for education.  Already this week, the staff has received lovely coffee drinks and flowers and on Thursday the Parent Association will host the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.  Thanks to all who are helping with that event.

The 4th graders gave us a very fitting and inspiring Prayer Assembly on Monday to launch our week. They took time to explain each of the Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor, the mourning, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, those who are merciful, those clean of heart, the peacemakers and the persecuted.  The 4th grade highlighted many members of our staff who are examples of specific beatitudes. They encouraged all of us to choose one of these Beatitudes this week to live out because God will reward all of us with his love. May all of you find moments of God’s grace in your days this week.

Habemus papam! Last Thursday the white smoke rose from the Vatican to announce that a new pope had been chosen! What a blessing for our faith community! This is the first US born pope and he chose the name Pope Leo XIV. “Robert Prevost was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He studied in Catholic schools in Chicago and later in Rome, Italy.” He was ordained in 1982 and his work took him to Peru where he became a bishop before taking a job at the Vatican in the last several years.  In his first speech, Pope Leo talked about bringing people together and building bridges and dialogue. This is a great opportunity for families to read and learn together about this historical moment. We wish every blessing upon our new pope!

Gratitude to our parent school leadership bodies!

  • Parent Association: For the last three years, Minou Reisinger and Kris Lund have chaired our Parent Association.  During that time, they have ensured the continuation of some of our beloved events such as the Father Daughter Dance and Mother and Son Bowling/Golf. They have helped the parent community come together to create connections and build the community spirit that is so valued by our families. They have led with vision, enthusiasm and a deep love of this community.  During their tenure they started and grew the Fall Carnival event, they helped increase communication and foster understanding and a sense of community through all the activities they organized. We are so grateful for their dedication. So now, we are looking for new chairs for next year! This leadership role works to realize the mission of the Parent Association and provide ongoing support to the school community.  Please reach out to Sean or Heidi with your interest or just to discuss further.
  • School Commission: This advisory board supports the mission of the school by ensuring fidelity to school finances, facilities, and Catholic identity.  At the end of this year, Kathleen Gallagher and Rob Gillette will be stepping down from the commission. We are so grateful for their leadership.  We are excited to welcome Scott Medley, Sarah Dunne Kettle and Luli Chaluleu. They bring backgrounds in education, change management and finances. We wish to thank and acknowledge the highly qualified group of applicants.

MAP Testing: We are in the process of having all students in second through eighth grade take the end of year MAP test in Reading, Language and Math. As you may recall, students also take this test in the fall.  Data from this testing helps us track student progress longitudinally and helps us make plans to meet student’s individual learning needs. The best preparation for students is to be well rested and well fed.

Putt Putt golf potluck this Friday!  Hope to see everyone this Friday, 5-7pm for the Parent Association sponsored Putt Putt golf potluck on the playground.   Thank you to the Kindergarten family leads Ben Barker, Damon Isham and Erika Love for helping organize.

Dear Families,

On Monday, our 5th grade class led a beautiful Prayer Assembly about the selection process for a new pope. As conclave begins Wednesday, we join Catholics all around the world as we pray for that process.

We wish to congratulate all those in our school and parish who received their First Communion on Sunday.  It was a full church and beautiful Mass.  Our prayers are with all of them.

Upper School Drama presentation of Godspell this week!  The ensemble has worked hard to create this production for the community. They are presenting three performances of the show this week!  All are welcome!

  • Friday, May 9, 7pm
  • Saturday, May 10, 2pm

Thanks to Ms. Kassebaum and the K-5th grade performers who presented their spring concert of showtunes last Friday. We heard wonderful student speakers who shared with us background on each song and wonderful singing performances by all. Thank you also to all the behind the scenes helpers!  Thank you to Ryan Barber for filming.  I will be forwarding to school families the video of the performance!

Staffing Update: We have been working diligently over the last month to interview and hire new staff to support our school programs.

  • Abby Pana for our third grade classroom. She comes to us with positive recommendations and several years of experience teaching in Tennessee.
  • Kaila Crosby for our fourth grade classroom. She has spent the last six years at St. Louise as their 4th grade teacher.
  • Stephanie Fluckey for our 5th grade classroom. She comes with very strong recommendations from St. Luke School where she has been a substitute teacher and where her children attend.
  • Benjamin Constantino as our Middle School Math teacher. He has many years of middle school math teaching experience in Spanaway, worked for the Washington Educators Association (WEA) for the last several years and has experience in leading First Robotics as an afterschool activity.
  • Esperanza Salazar, as our new art teacher.  She comes to us from Our Lady of Fatima where she has been teaching a number of years. A great opportunity for a job share between the schools!

We will continue to update you as we finalize our administrative staffing positions over the next couple of weeks.
