5th Grade Notables!
May 30, 2023
Dear Families,
This morning Mrs. Scheller provided us with a thoughtful reflection on why we celebrate Memorial Day–a day in which we honor all the soldiers who have died. She shared one story about the origin of this celebration. In May 1865, there was a large procession in Charleston, South Carolina led by 3,000 schoolchildren carrying roses and singing a Union marching song. Three years later a military leader called for a national holiday to remember all who had died in the Civil War. The holiday evolved to honor all troops who had fallen serving their country. She shared a prayer of gratitude for all who died fighting for freedom and peace.
Last Thursday the 5th graders had the culminating presentation of their Notables. Thank you to all the students for sharing their hard work and research to expand our understanding of notable historical figures.
On Wednesday, the Parent Association is celebrating all our students with cool treats after school at 2pm in the PreK parking lot! A huge thank you to our Parent Association chairs for nurturing a strong sense of community throughout the school year with fun events and activities.
We are also taking the opportunity on Wednesday to reveal our 100th Anniversary year logo: “1923-2023: Empowering a New Century–Faith, Learning & Service”. Stickers will be handed out to all students!
Our 100th Anniversary year of celebrating kicks off with the graduation of the 100th graduating class on Thursday, June 8! Starting in the fall, we have a year of special events focused on the school’s 100 years to celebrate current students and alumni alike and remember all the remarkable years the school has been here on Queen Anne hill! The graduation of our 101st class will bring our Anniversary Celebration Year to a close on June 6, 2024. Here are some of the scheduled events to look forward to and plan for. Learning Celebration: We are excited to welcome you on Thursday, June 1, to Learning Celebrations. This is an opportunity for your student to share their learning and growth throughout the school year with you. Each time slot hosts a maximum of four student/parent groups. The classroom teacher will be available to discuss student growth and progress. There will be a place for siblings to sit and wait just outside the classroom with a chance to read or do a provided activity sheet. The students have worked hard this year and it is great to celebrate their growth!
Field Day: This is one of students’ favorite days of the school year. Students should be dropped off as usual and after class attendance and announcements, they will join their school “Family” in the gym at 8:45am to launch the day of cheers, games and activities. The school will be providing pizza and popsicles at lunch for all students this year! Water will be available to all. Students can bring an alternate lunch if necessary. Students should come dressed for the weather!
